Instacart CEO Fidji Simo to Take on New Leadership Role at OpenAI
Instacart CEO Fidji Simo will now be seen in a new and bigger role in OpenAI. OpenAI said on Thursday that Simo will now join the company as “Application CEO”. She has already been a board member of OpenAI and will now gradually step down from Instacart and fully join OpenAI by the end of this year.
OpenAI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sam Altman said that he will remain in his current position and will continue to oversee major departments like research, compute and applications. Simo will report directly to Altman.
Altman said, “Applications is the part of our company that takes the responsibility of taking research to the world and making it useful for people. Fidji is best suited to lead it. He has made a very important contribution as a board member in the last one year.”
In OpenAI, Simo will also help strengthen the activities related to traditional company operations, although not much information has been given about it yet.
Fidji Simo has a long experience in product management and turning a business into a profit. Before joining Instacart, she has worked for more than 10 years at Meta (Facebook). There she played a major role in launching advertising in Facebook News Feed, monetization strategy of Facebook App and development of video products. Before leaving Meta, she was the head of Facebook App.
After joining Instacart, Simo took the company to public (IPO) in 2023. However, even after stepping down from the post of CEO, she will remain the chairperson of the board of Instacart. He said that a new CEO will be appointed from the management of the company, which will be announced soon.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Simo wrote, “It is a great honor and responsibility for me to join OpenAI at this important time. This organization has the power to take human potential to a new height and I am fully dedicated to contributing to its positive use.”
