OpenAI Expresses Interest in Buying Chrome if Google Is Forced to Sell
In a case going on against Google in the US, if the company has to sell Chrome browser, then OpenAI may be ready to buy it. According to a Reuters report, ChatGPT’s Head of Product Nick Turley has said this in front of the judge.
This case has been filed against Google by the US Department of Justice. It has been said that Google has maintained a monopoly in online search. In this case, Judge Amit Mehta has already given the verdict that Google is a monopolist. Now the hearing of the ‘remedies phase’ of the case has started, in which it will be decided which restrictions should be imposed on Google. Google has decided to challenge this decision.
Nick Turley told the court that OpenAI had contacted Google last year, so that ChatGPT could be connected to their search technology. Currently ChatGPT is using Microsoft’s Bing search platform. Turley also said that OpenAI has received a contract from a company, which he called ‘Provider No. 1’ said, we have faced many problems related to quality. However, he did not directly name Microsoft.
According to an email shown in the court, OpenAI believes that if they get Google’s API, they will be able to provide better service to the users. But till now Google has not done any partnership with them. Turley clearly said that “Today we do not have any partnership with Google.”
Apart from this, OpenAI is also working on its own search technology. Earlier the company intended that by the end of 2025, 80% of ChatGPT searches should be done through this system, but now they feel that it may take many years.
