xAI Launches Grok 3 API: Elon Musk’s AI Model Now Public, Pricing and Details Inside

Even though Elon Musk’s AI company xAI has been sued by OpenAI, Musk’s pace has not slowed down. Now he has made his company’s most powerful AI model Grok 3 available to everyone through API. This model has been created to compete with tools like GPT-4o (OpenAI) and Gemini (Google). It can also understand images and answer questions.

Grok 3 has come in two versions – Grok 3 and Grok 3 Mini. Both come with the ability to “reason” i.e. to think and understand. xAI has also released their prices. For Grok 3, users will have to pay $3 for 1 million tokens of input data and $15 for 1 million tokens of output. The Mini version is cheaper – $0.30 for input and $0.50 for output. But if someone wants a faster service, there are premium versions for that which cost more.

However, looking at these prices, people are saying that these models are not cheap. Its prices are similar to Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet, but Google’s new Gemini 2.5 Pro is cheaper than this and is also considered to be better in performance. Also, some people say that the claims made by xAI about the performance of Grok 3 were not completely correct.

Another thing that is bothering the users is the context window of Grok 3 – that is, how much information this model can process at a time. xAI had earlier said that it can process up to 1 million tokens simultaneously, but in the API this limit stops at 1.3 lakh tokens (about 97,500 words).

Grok was started by Elon Musk two years ago and he described it as different from other AI models – “bold”, “filterless” and “anti-woke”. This meant that this model would also give answers that other AI tools avoid giving. To some extent, Musk kept this promise. But Grok 1 and Grok 2 also remained limited on political and social issues. According to a report, the old Grok model showed left-wing inclinations on some topics such as transgender rights, diversity, and inequality.

Musk blamed Grok’s training data for this and promised that the next version would be “politically neutral”. But it is not yet clear how much xAI has changed in this direction and what impact it will have on the future.
